Chrissy K. Cheung — Vancouver Abstract Artist
Biography
Born and raised in Toronto, Canada, Chrissy K. Cheung discovered her passion for art at the age of seven. She later studied at Concordia University in Montréal, where she earned her Bachelor of Fine Arts with Distinction in 2000. During her studies, she completed a formative internship in industrial design under Alejandro Ruiz in Milan, Italy, in 1999.
In 2005, Cheung was selected for an artist residency at the Banff Centre for the Arts, which culminated in her solo exhibition Improv Paintings at The Other Gallery in Banff. Three years later, in 2008, she was accepted into the prestigious Emerging Artists Viewing Program at The Drawing Center in New York City.
Her paintings have been reviewed in Akimbo and Now Magazine, and she has been featured on CityTV Calgary. Cheung also contributed to the Salon des Arts at the 2008 Osheaga Festival in Montréal. Notable solo exhibitions include Structured Abstractions at 2 of 2 Gallery, Toronto, and Dessins contemporains at Maison de la Culture Plateau Mont-Royal, Montréal.
Now based in Vancouver, British Columbia, Chrissy Cheung continues to expand her distinctive visual language of gesture and colour. Her works are part of the Ville de Montréal Art Collection, as well as private collections across Canada, California, England, Denmark, France, Venezuela, and China.
Artist Statement
Chrissy Cheung’s paintings invite viewers to follow the rhythm of movement and connection that animate her abstract compositions. Though non-representational in form, her work incorporates subtle figurative references, transforming real and imagined imagery into complex layers of colour, gesture, and meaning.
Her creative process emphasizes motion and improvisation, reflecting her fascination with contemporary dance and music. Each brushstroke becomes a record of energy and rhythm — an interplay between the artist’s physical movement and the viewer’s visual journey.
Through this dynamic, Cheung captures the fluid essence of time, emotion, and perception, translating them into visual harmonies that pulse with both spontaneity and structure.
