Norval Morrisseau

Norval Morrisseau was born in Fort William, Ontario (now Thunder Bay) on March 14, 1931 into the Ojibway Nation.  Morrisseau became a legend in his own time where he accomplished achievements including:

  • Founder of the Woodland School of Art
  • Received the Order of Canada in 1978
  • Received an honorary doctorate from both McGill and McMaster University
  • Had major exhibitions in Canada, United States, Germany, and France
  • Has been called “the Picasso of First Nations artists”.

Norval Morriseau works capture colourful figurative images that have heavy black lines as well as X-Ray images.  Further His work has a sign of  the syllabic spelling of “Copper Thunderbird”, the name bestowed upon Norval Morrisseau by his Ojibway grandfather.
