Norval Morrisseau
Norval Morrisseau was born in Fort William, Ontario (now Thunder Bay) on March 14, 1931, into the Ojibway Nation. Most important Morrisseau became a legend in his own time where he accomplished achievements including:
- Founder of the Woodland School of Art
- Received the Order of Canada in 1978
- Received an honorary doctorate from both McGill and McMaster University
- Had major exhibitions in Canada, the United States, Germany, and France
- Has been called “the Picasso of First Nations artists”.
Norval Morriseau works capture colorful figurative images that delineated with heavy black lines as well as X-Ray images. Further has work of syllabic spelling of “Copper Thunderbird”, the name bestowed upon Norval Morrisseau by his Ojibway grandfather.
