Sigrid Gong with "Oh My Buddha" painting

“Oh My Buddha” by Sigrid Gong

Oh My Buddha was created in 2020 by Sigrid Gong.  The name is a spoof on the phrase, “Oh, my God.”  It was painted with oils on a 30×40 inch canvas, and came to Sigrid in a dream.  In the background, the galaxy stars were painted individually.

One day, we wanted to visit a Buddhist temple to light incense and give prayers.  However, the temples were closed.  So, to improvise, we went back to the gallery and offered incense and prayers to “Oh My Buddha”.  A couple days later, a couple friends visited.  After seeing the painting, they lit some incense and offered some prayers.  It’s funny how a gallery can become a place of worship with the right painting on the wall.

This year, explorAsian asked us to participate in their 25th year anniversary festival.  The theme of the festival was on different Asian artists intersecting, connecting, and networking with one another.  So, we chose “Oh My Buddha” as the featured work for the exhibition.

“Oh My Buddha” is the first work in a series of paintings with different deities of different religions and belief systems.  This new series has, yet, to be completed.  Have a look for more to come.
